Scrap Metal~Part Two: Alphabet Frame

Whilst visiting San Francisco in January (yes, I've been meaning to post about this for 9 months now....) we stumbled upon the most amazing antique store called Aria. It really isn't your typical antique store, I feel silly even calling it that. It was more like you found a trap door to a 18th century European attic and all the owners belongings were perfectly curated in piles of interesting knick-knacks and oddities. I was is hog-heaven!
There were skeleton keys, mini globes, vintage millinery, weathered letters written in French with a quill, bocce ball sets, and even a miniature roulette wheel. My favorite find was an entire alphabet set of brass printer's stencils. They each had the most magnificent patina of corroded old ink and were still in usable condition.
After mulling around what I would do with said alphabet, I decided to make a mirror after being inspired by this. The trickiest part was finding the right size hanging mirror so all the letters would fit perfectly. Once I did, I slapped them on with a little glue and voila! A fabulous DIY vintage mirror! It's so snazzy!

Scrap Metal~Part One: Lamp Terrarium

I'm a huge fan of the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. They have a rotating inventory of junk turned treasure. I usually stop by every few weeks and peruse the scene. I've been really into old brass light fixtures and have a growing collection, but haven't figured what to do with them until now. Watch this hanging brass lamp turn into the most adorable succulent terrarium right before your eyes.Disclaimer: the hardest part about this project was ripping out the existing bulb fixture. But with a little elbow grease and some pliers, that puppy popped right off. It also left a convenient drainage hole right at the bottom. It also really helped that the side of the lamp has a handy hinged "trap-door" so I could reach my mits into the space.

Boom. Super easy and super cute. All you have to do is give everybody a little spritzy-spray every few days and they are happy as clams.

treasure hunt

my search for a rustic bath cabinet took a while.

a. i'm picky

b. the little half bath that it's for is very small, and

c. it had to be the right price point

then lo-and-behold, this lovely little periwinkle lady popped up on craigslist. it was labeled $50, and when i called it was still available. success!

since it has glass windows, it's fully functional and display-worthy. i found a decorative ceramic tile at habitat-for-humanity restore, an origami crane gifted by my talented sculptor friend joe spear, and matching periwinkle retro milk-glass containers at a consignment shop.

the little bathroom has been transformed! and i finally have somewhere to store all the essentials.

i discovered that the reason a female canyon towhee had been giving me the stink-eye whenever i sat on the new, plush cushions of my back porch to enjoy my morning-time was a fresh nest she'd built inside of the wall sconce just above my head. i suddenly thought of all the times i'd flicked the light on at night, and hoped the mini-towhees weren't over-heating.

i started thinking about birds differently the summer of 2006, when i was working at shidoni bronze foundry in the village of tesuque, new mexico. a baby bird flew into the big room where i was working, and after hours of trying to coax it out, it remained. the next morning i arrived early, and found it on the ground just outside of the studio doors, flat on it's back.

it was one of the most beautiful things i've seen.

i pulled out some clay, and sculpted it on the spot. now it's cast in bronze and aluminum.

i continued to sketch, etch and sculpt bird-like figures, wondering why i had such a sudden attraction.

i asked my mama-in-law to read my animal "totem" during one of her visits, using the medicine cards, which are based on a collected knowledge and symbolism of the animal kingdom. "each person has nine power or totem animals that...emulate each person's abilities, talents, and challenges." of the nine cards that i pulled for my complete "totem", four were birds:

crow= keeper of sacred law

raven= bringer of magic

eagle= ability to live in the realm of spirit

blue heron= self-reflection

My styling session of the Inn and Spa at Loretto finally aired last weekend on the Travel Channel. I don't have a TV so I am lucky enough to watch it over and over again on You Tube!

My grubby hands made WAY too many appearances...see if you can guess the number of cameos! I was really happy that they showed the great styling of the spa, it turned out so dreamy and glow-y!

The segments really didn't do justice to the ballroom styling, so here is a lovely picture by our pro: Babak of Insight Foto.

This weekend I was asked to design and style a video shoot for the Travel Channel that was taking place at the Inn and Spa at Loretto, a lovely destination wedding venue in Santa Fe. Thrilled with the opportunity, I had the chance to art direct the entire event, spotlighting the wedding resources that the venue offers. Here are just a few sneak peek phone pics from the day.

To mirror the elegant Southwest vibe the Loretto offers, I centered the design around a unique and beautiful color palette. I chose colors like coral and peach paired with gray/greens. I accented the tabletop with metallic coppers and golds. The flowers provided by Marisa Peluso popped beautifully off of the linens!
I even designed the look for the lovely couple's ensemble. I had a blast attending a fitting at the elegant bridal atelier, Laura Sheppherd. There we chose a dress to coordinate with our theme, as well as a beautiful veil and jewelry.

Part of the shoot centered on the wedding cocktail hour where we showcased delectable appetizers and a Prickly Pear martini with a gold leaf rim. Yum!

I was super stoked to take part in such a fun shoot. All of the folks were great to work with and I am excited to see the final product. It should be airing some time in June....I'll keep you posted!

garden magic

each morning i wait for the coffee to brew, put on my slippers, open the kitchen door, and tiptoe through the yard observing what has opened. i now understand why my grandmothers have spent so many hours digging in the dirt, laboring over their landscaping. the rewards are breathtaking.
it's only may, and the yard is already smiling.
so am i.

the middle, right image shows my new foxgloves. by far the most durable, fitting, and foxy gardening gloves i've ever owned. the style is called "works." indeed they do!
i also discovered a new plant yesterday called "sea lavender" (top left and right images). these babies sprout mini-white flowers out of the purple ones, and can handle a full day of sun. i combined them with some punchy coral geraniums.

How to be a Knife Ninja

Until now, all our knives were kept in a sliding drawer...the "Danger Drawer" as the mister referred to it. Yes, it was definitely a hazard sifting around there for the perfect tool, but I love knives and have, uh, a few.

We decided we need a knife rack but after a bit of internet surfing we realized that no one manufactures a double sided, magnetic knife rack. They are all magnetic on one side and meant to be mounted to a wood surface. Our only surface was an open fridge side, as we don't have any cupboards.

Shucks.

Then we realized that with a little elbow grease we could mount two to each other and create the ultimate MAGNETIC Magnetic Knife Rack.

We found a simple and inexpensive version from IKEA and purchased two. {I do love IKEA, click here if you want one too.}
It comes with a heavy duty magnetic casing and a strip that is to be mounted to a wall (the one with holes). Once the strip is mounted you can just place the magnetic casing over it. Instead of screwing the mounts to a wall, we screwed them together. (Right)
Then, we dropped the magnetic casing on each side. *Beware if you value your fingers at all, because those puppies SNAP shut and I nearly lost a fingernail, holy molars!
Then, boom, you're ready to magnify to the fridge and display all your pretty sharpies!

Valentine's Beach Picnic!

I had a fabulous time teaming up with lovely and talented photographer Maggie Marsek, and here is what we created together! We could not have asked for a more gorgeous day on the beach....

We wanted to portray a fresh, cool, SoCal vibe with lots of loving details. The cliffs, warm sand and gorgeous water provide the always ahhhh-mazing backdrop, so that meant keep the details simple but add a punch of pinks, crystal and white.

I wanted to share this beautiful card I received in the mail from Gia Canali Photography (the fabulous gal behind these). It's elegance and beauty has brought calm to me as it sits on my desk, even after the hectic holidays during which it was received. I just love the texture of the Thai paper and the unique presentation of a perfectly simple message.

The card was created through a collaboration of Gia herself and Tiny Pine Press. Her husband Matt even had a chance to try his hand at letterpress! So awesome!

Working Holiday

I LOVE my work, I'm addicted to it, and I just can't stop. Of course there are parts that aren't always so great, but the majority of the time, I am bouncing with glee over a wonderfully creative and challenging project.

Recently, I had the joy of styling a photo shoot for two blogs I contribute to, both with different focuses for each company. I was inspired by a few bolts of vintage lace found at Santa Fe Fabrics and these amazing Quicksilver Roses at Artichokes and Pomegranates.

I began with the idea to create a table setting that would inspire a dinner party or wedding, especially since I recently acquired a vintage set of petwer colored glass champagne coupes... total score! I got down with a fun DIY project creating lace covered votive holders and put together floral centerpieces with one of the most magnificently dreamy and romantic color palettes I've seen in a while.

Unique and exotic wreaths:
Pine Cones, pink Cymbidium Orchids, Magnolia Leaves, Red Chile Pods, Olive branches, Berzillia pods, Curly Willow loops and Reindeer Moss....no gaudy bows here.

Thick yarn and big ol' needles:
Nothing makes me feel more accomplished and productive than finishing a project in 30 minutes flat.

Sunsets on Snow:
Being a California girl, I never thought I'd come around to these, but sunsets on New Mexico snow-covered mountains are always so beautiful and fleeting. That indescribable color of light makes my heart ache sometimes.

I fell in love with this feather Tippet from J.Crew....however, the price tag made me think otherwise.
So, naturally I thought, "I'll just make my own."

A few ostrich feathers later....voila! I even like that it is a little more wild than the J.Crew version.

this group of talented 5th graders in a public school in staten island, new york continues to change, evolve, and grow each year. beginning in 2000, the amazing "mr. b" has recorded and posted his choir's progress on youtube with the principal's permission. they've performed for stars like stevie nicks and beyonce, and continue to tackle both classic and cutting edge pop songs each week.

i simply can't get enough of this inspiring group of talent: the catalogue is at once refreshing and addicting. they even cover journey's "don't stop believin", itunes' most downloaded song in history, and gaga's "just dance." mr. b also posts audition tapes, and one of my favorite's is azaria's. one of the choir's most unique characterstics is their sincere, uncontrollable movement. not one student sits (or stands) still as they sing together.

as a public school student of chorus class through the years myself, this really brings me back to the hard work, excitement, and thrill of using voice as instrument.

Art, Underground: an addendum

The NY Times featured an article revealing an art exhibit called, "The Underbelly Project" within the catacombs of an abandoned subway track. 103 street artists are featured; but no one knows where the exhibit is.

I've never been keen to painting on canvas. There's not quite as much of a thrill to it. I've always preferred random objects, furniture, blocks, old windows, etc. and I think that is why I've taken a liking to graffiti. I guess it goes in the category with my love of fireworks as things that are generally frowned upon by law-abiding citizens.

The word, "graffiti" has such a negative buzz to it, so I must clarify that I'm not applauding those who tag their names on store-fronts with "rude decoration," but I suppose I mean to say that I appreciate finding art in places that it doesn't normally belong. Street art. Wall art.

It can be beautiful, unexpected and a clever surprise.

I love the ephemeral quality to painting on walls, it's permanent and not so permanent nature. It may stay there forever, or, it may be painted over by someone else. That seems to be the risk an artist takes when creating their piece.

I found these pieces on a trip to Los Angeles, specifically on Melrose Blvd, in Santa Monica and in Venice. All proved to be wonderful places to discover murals/stencils in random places.

The mister and I took a field trip to the New Mexico State Fair. It is quite the sight- lots of animals, cotton candy, kiddos, and everything and anything you can imagine, FRIED.
My favorite part was the rides. Of course, I was way too chicken to get on any of them, for fear of ending up on Yahoo news....but they sure were fun to photograph.

Standing underneath the clanking metal, spinning contraptions and whizzing tracks was quite the thrill!
The colors of the lights in the warm evening air just glowed and radiated so beautifully.
I even became enamored with some of the blurred photographs.

Since we made the trip, I couldn't leave without getting on a single ride, so I settled on the least daunting... the Ferris Wheel. Needless to say, I was still a scared-y cat way up on the top of that thing!

I found my heart in the trees

It's my favorite time of the year, when the air is crisp and cool and the leaves begin to change their colors. The Aspen trees in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are turning from chartreuse to deep golds to bright orange and even to bittersweet red.
Every year the ski area runs their lifts so folks who only like to hike down the mountain (like me) can enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Being in the mountains is like being in a sea of gold!

Whilst I should be getting ready for work, I am still in my jammies, listening to good tunes, enjoying a frothy chai latte and eating the most wonderful figs for breakfast.
It is finally the season and the stores are bursting with multiple varieties. I of course had to photograph them because they are so pretty, but I wish you could taste them. They are plump and ripe and remind me of long summer days spent in my grandmother's backyard. We would climb onto the branches and pick figs straight off the tree, and have no idea how special that was.

The Most Beautiful Store in Malibu

If you ever find yourself in Malibu, California, you MUST be sure to stop at Cosentino's !
There you will find the most beautiful succulents, orchids and seashells...not just on their own, but all mixed together. The creative arrangements are stunningly beautiful and each display is carefully crafted.

Exotic succulent and orchid species are tucked all around the shop and each corner provides another surprise to delight the senses. Everywhere you look, another detail is to be appreciated.

Shelves display antique sea glass, vintage linens and a variety of seashells. You can also find unique furniture, Chinese containers and other one-of-a kind treasures.

I was in heaven! If I could live there, I would. Cosentino's is truly the most beautiful store in all of Malibu.

Bathing Beauties

With Summer in full swing and the heat causing my bangs to frizz and my brow to glow, I feel the need to go grab my swim cap and take a cool plunge!

Who knew swim caps could look so cute! I just love the fashions and glamour associated with the vintage bathing beauties pictured above.

Water ballet, otherwise know as synchronized swimming has become a popular modern workout which combines strength, grace, breath control and of course fashion.

Synchronized swimming first came to the stage in Berlin, Germany in 1891, but it wasn't until 1933 when the World Exhibition in Chicago showcased "The Modern Mermaids," an elaborately staged underwater performance.

In the 40's and 50's these performances gained popularity in Hollywood films with the appeal of Esther Williams, a competitive swimmer and movie star. The clip above combines amazing orchestration, stunning costumes, athletics, and of course Esther's special swimming talent combined with the ability to smile underwater with her eyes open, I'm impressed!

Paradise Found

Yesterday evening I was skipping down the paths at the Denver Botanical Gardens. I'm almost 30, but nothing excites me like a small child more than being surrounded by beautiful gardens, lush plantings, overflowing fountains and humming bees.
I was in paradise. Every where I turned were signs of nature's perfect design; ribs of Swiss Chard that looked like they were painted with vibrant watercolors, sweet layered domes of cabbage leaves, and some of my favorite things in the whole wide world, blooming hens and chicks!

We were able to visit the gardens at dusk and were treated with the most beautiful sunset and flowers that echoed the colors of the sun's final glow. Currently the gardens are showcasing a Henry Moore exhibit of twenty different sculptures. I couldn't think of a Moore perfect place to display such elegant pieces and enjoy a perfect summer evening!

Summertime Recipe: Watermelon Gazpacho

Picking the perfect watermelon can be a crapshoot. I've heard to look for bee stings, minimal yellowing, heavy ones, round ones....
I tend to give mine good slap and listen for a nice hollow sound. It is quite the scene to see me in the market slapping up all the melons. Well this last time, I hit a winner! It was so good I could hardly stop eating it while I was cutting it into big fat wedges.
Of course it is always a wonder what to do if you get a mediocre watermelon. You don't want to eat it, or pawn it off on your BBQ guests, but I think I have found the solution: WATERMELON GAZPACHO. Holy molars, this recipe is a dinger! The magic of watermelon marrying a salty and flavorful mess of a little spice, fresh herbs, garlic and veggies, wooo! If you're in to cold soups, this is perfect for appetizers for a BBQ or even lunch on a hot summer day. I like to sip mine in Moroccan tea glasses for an added touch of flair!
The Recipe:
8 c. Coarsely chopped watermelon (which only is about 1/4 of a big ol' melon!)
1 Large tomato, diced
1/2 Cucumber, peeled and diced
1/2 Small purple onion, diced
1 Clove garlic, minced (I did two because I like to sweat garlic...and note, it gets garlicier the more it sits)
2 Tbs. Cilantro, finely chopped
1/2 c. Extra virgin olive oil
1/3 c. Tomato juice (like V8)
1/3 c. Water
1/4 c. Sherry Vinegar
2 Tbs Lemon juice (I used limes which worked just fine)
1/2 tsp. Cayenne (a little went a long way and had quite the kick!)
Salt to taste

Directions:
Mix together in a food processor or use an immersion blender, careful not to splatter! The amount you blend will be determined by how fine you want your chunks. I like a bit to chew on so I just did a quick blend.
Chill before serving.
I recommend preparing this a day before you serve it as the flavors tend to come alive after marinating for a bit!

Strawberry season is here. I get downright giddy when I begin to see the signs donning a huge hand painted strawberry pop up along the roadsides here in rural Washington. To me, there's something so romantic about buying your food straight from the field - where you know it was picked fresh and fully ripe this morning by hard working hands and you have the opportunity to look into the eyes of the farmers as you haul off that flat of sweet succulent fruit that took so much heart to produce.

This year, I've decided to jar up some of that summer goodness to enjoy throughout the year. I made my own strawberry jam. And a learned a few things along the way. I made my first batch the traditional way, with pectin and sugar. It came out good, but really, REALLY sweet! For some who may not know, pectin is the ingredient that makes the jam gel up. But unfortunately, the ingredient that activates this effect is sugar... and a LOT of it! (7 CUPS for one batch to be exact!!!) That's almost 50% sugar for the recipe. If you start to cut the sugar, you end up with a runny product. I was in a quandary because I didn't want to mask the natural flavor of the strawberries with an overbearing flavor of sugar. I wanted my jam to be pure fruit.

In my searches, I ran into an alternative called Pomona Pectin. This pectin uses calcium water derived from citrus peel to activate the jelling process in lieu of sugar. It requires low amounts of sweetener to make the jam which frees you up to use a touch of whatever you choose to use, preserving the natural sweetness of the fruit. You can find it at specialty stores such as Whole Foods. I like the packaging. ;) For a great easy to follow page that teaches you how to make jam start to finish, click here.

To sweeten this second batch, I used a touch of local wildflower honey from Brush Prairie, the town next to mine, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. The result was a sweet and tangy jam. It tastes like a handful of strawberries straight from the fields, instead of "sugar with a hint of strawberries"....

There is nothing like good jam on a seedy whole grain bread....

The numerous blueberry farms around my town will be open for U-Pick after the 4th. Blueberry jammin' - here I come. I can hardly wait. My kids are going to love the pickin' process as well. I am already thinking homemade Christmas gifts.....

Summertime always puts me in the mood for popsicles. A popular trend is to make your own using ice pop molds. I haven't seen those since I was like 8! I think it is funny that this nostalgic treat is making such a great comeback.

Now and Then: Painted Window

My Monday afternoon was spent doctoring up a boring little window in our bathroom. I was inspired by my weekend at the Hacienda Doña Andrea, a beautiful wedding venue and bed and breakfast. They have similar treatments on their windows, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
All it took was some white acrylic paint and a broken comb to get the squiggles. Much more exciting now, I'd say!

CRAFTERNOON: Papel Picado Luminarias

Sounds fancy, doesn't it! Well, the good news is that these lovely little lanterns are easier to make than to pronounce, and will bring a beautiful, colorful glow to any occasion!

Papel Picado is Spanish for "perforated paper" and is a Mexican folk art tradition of delicately cutting pieces of tissue paper. Typically the pieces are strung together to form a festive banner and are used for weddings and parties. I decided to cut mine up and make a beautiful set of lanterns for a party.
They are very simple to make! Here's what you need:
-Glass cylinder vases, 6" tall and 3 1/4" in diameter
-8 1/2 x 11 sheets of frosted vellum paper
-Double sided tape
-Papel Picado banners
-Votive candles
All you have to do is cut the Papel Picado to the size of the vellum sheet, affix a few pieces of double sided tape, and roll 'em up!

I paired the lanterns with these adorable floral arrangements in salsa tins and votives wrapped in crepe paper. Traditional Papel Picado can be found here, and custom designs can even be found on Etsy!

Treat Yourself!

We all need a little pampering here and there. I think it is important to reward yourself, take care of yourself and even treat yourself. I'm not saying we need to be booking spa weekends after every 40 hours, but it is a good idea to take joy in the little perks that we don't get every day.

My Tuesday treat was a gluten-free lemon-poppy seed muffin from Treehouse Pastry, an all organic bakery. It was the perfect pat on the back for a busy weekend.

I think I'm addicted. And, I maybe, sort of, kinda had a cup of decaf to wash it down.

haven't we all collected them? chosen carefully at the counter when we have to buy them? i have dreamed of designing them.

1. griffin & sabine by nick bantock.

one of my favorite illustrated books in which "an extraordinary correspondence" unfolds betwixt two artists, one of which designs stamps for the small island where she resides. it's grown-up-pop-up, in that you extract the letters out of envelopes affixed to each page.

2. once again, i must mention my jeweler friend here, margaret emma lane, who owns one of the most amazing stamp collections i've seen over the years, and put it to creative use: this image shows a necklace she made for me.

3. i have a chalk board in my kitchen that helps me track my "to-dos." the top portion of it has little framed spaces, in which i put some of my favorite stamps from my own collection.

4. the recently released "love" king & queen stamps are one of my favorite designs. detailed yet simple, colorful yet subtle.

Look at them go! We planted a trio of Blue Lake, Cherokee Wax, and Purple Queen beans. They are the bush variety, so unfortunately I won't be climbing any magical stalks.
Our veggie garden was inspired by Cameron and her husband. They told us about gardening in hay bales and we were willing to give it a try....especially since our New Mexico dirt is less than spectacular. It is easy, relatively cheap and rewarding. To find out to make your own straw bale garden click here. We have a few varieties of tomatoes pictures above....I just need Liz to come to NM and make me some snazzy trellises!
I even put in a drip system this weekend, which is a savior when there are so many seedlings to tend to, like these Japanese eggplant and yellow squash.

Check out my to-die-for Snow in Summer. I just love it when it snows in summer at my house! The white against the chartreuse is really incredible.

Below are the proud parents of six new chickadees. Aren't they precious? There is nothing like the hens and chicks. I think it's because they remind me of living in the desert where the sun is always shining. They adorn the back splash of my kitchen sink and bring me succulent happiness every time I pause for a visit.

CRAFTERNOON: Oil Cloth Cushions

As the days grow longer and the weather turns warm, we are spending more time out in the garden. We have a lovely set of chairs and a table surrounded by our lilac bushes and apricot trees (which are full of baby green apricots!) Lately, I've been looking for way to gussy up my patio furniture. I decided to make a few seat cushions out of oil cloth because it would provide a colorful and weatherproof comfort. Oil cloth is readily available here in Santa Fe and I settled on a cheerful pink and yellow chinz pattern.
I couldn't have completed this project without the help of my 1960's Singer Touch and Sew. It was my mother's, and believe it or not, this puppy is still trucking! It is like an old jalopy that has it's particular buzzes and whirs and I feel like I know those sounds so well. It is, without a doubt, the most fabulous vintage fixture in my studio.
Dining in the garden is now complete! Cheers to more lazy summer afternoons!

OMGorgeous peonies....swoon!I got my fingernails dirty and planted some seeds. I'm a sucker for packaging and these "Botanical Interests" packs just call my name! They even have an iPhone app!The highlight of the weekend were these cake balls! They are bite-sized gobs of frosted cake...I could have eaten like 100! I found this recipe on Bakerella, a fantastic site for baking inspiration. The BEST part is that they were also gluten free!!! Believe it or not, good ol' Betty Crocker has come to the g-free side and now offers gluten free cake and cookie mixes, alleluia!

So, there I was. Stepping into the car to meet the family in Portland, freshly showered and primped, clutching my purse and sunglasses, when what do I see? My neighbor loading up his dump trailer with remnants of curly willow - the tree he just removed from his backyard. I couldn't let it go. Late as I was, I jogged down in my raised flip flops and said, "STOP! Can I have some of that?" I had no idea what for. It just seemed like I could use curly willow for something neat. He handed me the loppers. And next thing I know, I am dragging half a tree down the middle of the street, hideously late for my family meeting, and shlepping the bushy rats nest right into the empty space in the garage that my wonderful husband had just cleaned. It seriously took up half the garage. But such is life living with someone who needs to "make stuff" all the time, right?

Well, after a few weeks of thought, and feeling quite bad about messing up my hubby's space, it dawned on me. Le Jardin! Last year I had a Sweet 100 tomato plant that grew 6 feet tall, then, conquering the feeble wire conical cone I had provided for support, it proceeded to grow over the edge, then back down, and along the ground. Had it had a GOOD support, it would have been at least 12 feet tall! I had recently priced stronger ugly square cages at the farm store, and decided I wasn't going to break the bank to maximize the space in my garden, I could do it myself! After finding some salvaged cedar from a discount lumber lot, here's what I came up with. The huge one is for the sweet 100. Then, once I ran out of usable pieces from the curly willow, my other neighbor offered me all the willow I wanted out of her creek. Sooo, I continued on to finish the last few supports. I am looking forward to nurturing the garden this year without running into the endless tripwires of fishing line I usually have holding up those flimsy tomato conical cages! YAY! Bye bye fishing line! Hello pretty spaces. I think I like the final one the best with just two sides. Less obtrusive:
I'll post an update this summer to let you know which worked out to be the best design.
Oh, and I'm excited about my little cucumber trellis, too.

Okay, now that I am sharing, I must give you the update on my lettuce patch. This year, I put a pot in the middle for my mint. (As some of you know, mint is invasive and can take over the garden, so it should be contained. Here's my blurb for the "color me bad" theme this week: I threw in some red/orange super bells, so I will have some beautiful cascading color this summer to compliment my green mint.)

I do love early 90s R&B harmony vocals...but more importantly I totally dig perusing the paint swatches at the hardware store. I don't know what it is but every time we go to Lowes or Home Depot I need to stop and stare at the vast array of square cards in all their technicolor glory.
I usually start picking out my favorites and creating beautiful color combinations. For what, I'm not sure, but maybe someday they'll be the inspiration for a room color and couch cushions, an invitation suite or floral scheme. Nonetheless, it keeps the ol' creative brain a turnin' so I stuff my pockets with the little colorful cards.
I did find a less wasteful way to delight in color schematics. The wonderful blog, Color Collective, creates a daily color palette of inspiration based on work by designers, photographers, and artists. I highly recommend stopping by!All images via Color Collective

Chicken-Sitttin'

Last week I chicken-sat and had the opportunity to watch 6 hens and 1 rooster while their owner was out of town. The mister and I are contemplating becoming full-blown farmers and along with our veggie garden, might get some chickens to complete our back yard. This was sort of a test run to see if I was cut-out for raising a clutch.As long as you have the space for a coop, they are quite easy to take care of. A little water, little feed, some wood shavings and voila! They have fun personalities and I enjoyed watching them run around the yard and scrape and peck at the dirt. I'm easily amused, I know.

Contrary to popular belief, roosters do not just crow in the morning. Cinnamon, the protector of the hens, with his beautiful iridescent feathers and showy tail let out crows all throughout the afternoon! I think the neighbors are used to his mid-day vocal musings.The best part was the bounty of eggs I collected! It was such a treat to open the coop and see what treasures had been left among the wood shavings. Several of the chickens were the Aracana variety which meant they laid eggs in beautiful shades of blue. They even tasted better with rich yellow yolks. Now I know why I am addicted to fritattas!

Our chicken operation may not commence until next year, but until then I will be dreaming of fresh eggs and the sweet coos and clucks of my chicken brood.

Rock-a-bye-birdie

Hung in the dappled light of my apricot tree and nestled among blossoming lilac is a Mexican tin star. Sometimes I'll put a candle in it if we're feeling festive, but mostly it just swings gently in the breeze, like the North star of my garden.
Today, we were enjoying a Mother's day lunch in our yard with the in-laws. The sun was warm on our faces and the scent of the lilacs lazily wafted around us. The mister's mama is an avid bird watcher and was pointing out all the varieties of feathered friends that were stopping by for a chirp or two.

As the breeze settled she said, "Do you hear that? It's baby birds!" I could hear slight little peeps but couldn't tell where they were coming from. She then noticed a mama bird take off from the tin star in the apricot tree. (She has good eyes!)
We crept out way over and realized that the most amazing nest had been built inside of the star! In the cozy nest were four fuzzy little chirps taking an afternoon nap. (You can see the beak of one of the babies in the picture above) I decided that this was the most magnificent place to have a nest. It made me so happy that the star was able to provide a protected, spacious, and oh so very unique home!

My mom always says she's glad I picked her.

That was always a funny concept to me. I imagined that way up in the fluffy clouds of heaven was a long line of moms, waiting expectantly to be picked by diaper-clad babies that floated by on little cloud poufs.

I'm glad I picked her too. She would let me stay home from school to learn how to sew, play duets with us on the piano, let us paint the furniture, cook a different meal almost every night, hold us tight in a warm blanket when we got out of the bath and let us have M&M's for dinner when dad was out of town. She even put up with me during my moody teens and sent me the best care packages when I left for college.

I'm not a mom, so I have no idea what it is like to love a child, but I do know what it is like to receive the love of a mother, and I appreciate how special that is. All of you with children, I admire you, your patience, the love you give, and the very important role you play in another human being's life. Saying "thank you" would never seem like enough, nor could the world's largest bear hug, but Mama, I love you, and I hope you know how special you are to me.

The Homesick Hanky

After watching Julie and Julia I was in love with small space living! More in love with the idea of it really, not necessarily coveting 500 square feet of space in real life.

I loved how Julie's apartment was decorated with sweet twinkle lights, a small dining table and a nifty divider for the "bedroom." It wasn't until a fellow bloggerita pointed out that above Julie's bed were framed vintage "state" handkerchiefs. It was then that I decided I needed an early birthday present and set out to find a vintage California (my home state) handkerchief for myself.After a bit of searching at local shops and finding mostly Kansas and Arizona state hankies priced at $60, I turned to the good ol' trusty internet. I found a perfect hanky for $13! It had a beautifully printed map with painted accents of Hollywood Studios, Olivera Street and the Rose Bowl.
I found a custom size frame for it and after a little DIY, and a greater appreciation for professional framers, I now have a cheery, vintage handkerchief to remind me of home whenever I am feeling a bit nostalgic for my coastal roots.

Indoor Sunday

I had plans to work in the yard this Sunday. I was excited to prep my garden beds for veggies and plant my newly acquired rose bushes and lavender plants. But when I awoke with anticipation of dirty fingernails and sun burnt shoulders, I saw that it was snowing.

Yes, snowing.

Yes, it is May 2nd.
So instead I decided to play in the kitchen and experiment with a frittata recipe I had in mind. I made it with caramelized onions, spinach, mushrooms, roasted red peppers (via a TJ's tapenade), smoked salmon and cream cheese. Golly, was it good! It was rich and creamy, with enough veggies to make you feel semi-healthy. The caramelized onions are what did it for me though, the touch of sweetness balanced the smokiness of the salmon. So delightful...and pretty too!

It's been a while since I've been to an IKEA....well, it's been since college, when outfitting a dorm room was as easy as $1.99, $2.99, $3.99. I thought I'd stop buy while I was visiting California and my oh my, was I delighted to see so many great deals and clever interior ideas. Golly, how I wish I could surprise the mister with a foldaway couch, patio set, full length mirrors and new curtains. But all that wouldn't exactly fit in my carry-on, now would it.
So instead I settled on an aesthetically pleasing scarf rack.
It's the perfect size for my carry-on and very necessary for corralling my collection of a ba-jillion scarves. I think it could even double as a nifty vine trellis....hmmm!

I recently fell in love with a necklace during a recent Anthropologie visit. At the time I couldn't bring myself to spend close to $40 when more important things like my electric bill needed to be paid.
So instead, I decided to make it myself. While in San Diego, I took a trip to the Black Bead, a favorite spot since I was young. There, I found all the goodies I needed to re-create the necklace...for almost half the price!After a few feet of chain, some base metal pins, a lobster clasp and some jewel-y gems, I was all set!There is something more satisfying about some good ol' DIY!

I'm a huge fan of international cooking....even though I haven't traveled much, I love to try new spices and ingredients that aren't indigenous to the United States. I have a great Thai cook book that I peruse for inspiration. Though, many times I run into the same conundrum, an exotic ingredient included in the recipe cannot be found in ANY supermarket. Sure, I could order it online or try 5 different stores, but hey, who wants to make more than one stop for groceries? Then once you've found bulgur wheat, how are you going to use up the 5 pound sack you had to buy?

CRAFTERNOON: Découpage with Mod Podge

I picked up these cute little glass votive holders for a dollar a piece and was inspired for a CRAFTERNOON of decoupage.
I've have some beautiful origami and rice papers that are perfect for this special project.
Good ol' Mod Podge...couldn't live without it!
I applied the delicate strips of rice paper first and then thin strips of origami papers.
Finished off with lacquered black beading and ready to be hung!

Not only do co-owners Sarah and Eric get down with hand-crafted soaps, SAIPUA is also an amazing floral design studio. They specialize in the most exquisite, spectacular, lush and perfect floral arrangements. For those of you wondering, I did jinx the warm weather. On the Spring Equinox we received over a foot of snow....some Spring!There may still be snow on the ground, but in my mind it's Spring. During the short moments before I drift off to sleep, I spend my last thoughts on plans for the garden, vibrant color schemes, spectacular succulents and my future greenhouse splurges. I may be jinxing this warm spell we're in, but the sun is shining and the birds are chirping....and my crocus are coming out to say hello. I wore shoes without socks today and yesterday a friend and I took an afternoon walk in the fresh air and not on a treadmill.
The sunshine on our faces felt warm and hinted at the coming days filled with picnics, BBQs, flip flops and of course lawn games. We were lucky enough to walk through a very "official" croquet game in the park.
I have a feeling that games like horseshoes, bocce, wiffle ball, pétanque, and badminton will be all the rage this spring! Who's with me?

Cheep! Cheep! Thrills

For those of us in New Mexico, our retail shopping options are slim to none. I typically scour thrift stores for clothes that may have stood the test of time, or shop online. But mostly, I hit up Targét Boutique for my staple items. It's a great one-stop shop, and yes, most of the items are staples... solids... plain...cotton.
But, we're in luck! Liberty of London has hit the town and no longer are we starved for bold and fresh patterns!
From lamps to purses to dresses and mugs, the punch and pizazz is all there! I am usually wary of a Target design collaborations as the quality of the products is sometimes compromised. In this case, I am feeling more hopeful. "Since 1875, Liberty has been synonymous with luxury and great design. Arthur Liberty's intuitive vision and pioneering spirit led him to travel the world looking for individual pieces to inspire and excite his discerning clientele."
Well, I'm inspired and excited! These duds and housewares are so reasonably priced you'll probably see me decked out head to toe in printed perfection!

dreamscapes & wonderlands

Since the 5th grade I have recorded my dreams. But making a written record of something so visual, so vague, proves challenging. I feel that over the years improvement has come from practice, and that if I jot down the images and ideas in such a way as to trigger a memory of what I dreamed, then I'm successful.

I have tackled this idea in my visual artwork as well. My first book of prints sprang from the idea of the conscious vs. subconcious, how they constantly influence one another, and how present elements of waking life, memory, even nostalgia can be in these dreamscapes.

dream·scape –noun, 1. a dreamlike, often surrealistic scene. 2. a painting depicting such a scene. origin: 1959, from dream + -scape, from landscape, etc. first attested in a Sylvia Plath poem.

Last night I saw Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and it brought back memories of the animated film, reading the story, and the little "wonderlands" that we create as children. Sure, it was no Edward Scissorhands, but an intense visual experience built upon imagination. In other words, still worth the experience, even if it wasn't quite as dark or substantial as I wanted it to be.

Artists Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison create the kind of visual, dream-like spaces I admire. The photo above, from the series called "The Architect's Brother", explores the human relationship with the earth. The DeCordova museum posted this write-up on the series:
"At the heart of these pictorial tales is a lone individual—ParkeHarrison himself as “Everyman”—engaged in Herculean struggles with nature and artifice. The mythic world he creates mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled. In actions that are both humorously metaphorical and lyrically poetic, ParkeHarrison constructs beguiling stories that make us consider what we have done or are doing to our earth."

CRAFTERNOON: Mod-Vintage Chalkboard

Crafternoon, (kraft-ur-nooon) n., Several glorious hours of inspired creativity resulting in a DIY project to share with your friends.Today's crafternoon project was a Modern-Vintage Framed Chalkboard. I dig how the ornate curves and frills of the frame are juxtaposed with a striking, opaque paint.
As a lover of lists, I adore how convenient, yet practical this chalkboard is for my ever-evolving "to-do's". I have a feeling it will also make an appearance as a brunch menu display!
1. An old frame, preferably open backed and scored from a sweet yard sale
2. Gessoed Art Board, sized to fit in frame
3. Chalkboard spray paint
4. High-Gloss spray paint, your color of preference (I went with "Coral Mist" since it was on sale for $2.99 and I happen to LOVE the color coral)
5. Tacks, to fix board into frame
6. Chalk, to write lists and draw funny pictures on your new mod-vintage chalkboard

Striking Similarities

If you were lucky enough to receive the March edition of Anthropologie's catalog (..er, book) you were probably jumping with glee, whilst coveting every bauble and fabric adornment, like I was.
I was pleased to see an Alphonse Mucha-inspired style, which made me want to stick stems of spring florals into my delicately disheveled coiffure and traipse around in the moonlight.

Weekend Treats {in pictures}

Kicked the weekend off by designing a floral arrangement for Annie Leibovitz, who was being recognized in the Women of Distinction Series sponsored by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. I used lotus pods, hydrangea, pomegranates, magnolia leaves, ranunculus, cherry blossoms, flax leaves, pussy willow, anemones and peonies...oh my!
Caught up on some old classic flicks. I love MAME, with Lucille Ball. (I think I like it better than the Rosalind Russell version)
Attended a Southern inspired crock-pot-cook-out complete with pulled pork, coleslaw, pickled okra, key lime pie, moonshine (aka: wine) and great company. I brought these mini mac n' cheese bites. They were not g-free so I didn't try one, but the mister happily taste-tested and approved!
One milkshake, two straws: via the lovely folks at Flying Star.

Romeo y Julieta

I'm a huge fan of containers... always have been. I can't really stand the smell of cigars, but the boxes they come in, that's a whole different story! When I stumbled upon these $5 finds, I was overjoyed! I happened to be out with some friends at an Albuquerque watering hole that is also a cigar bar and saw a stack of used, empty boxes. There were big ones, little ones, colorful ones, wooden ones, even some gilded with metallic accents. Always willing to inquire, I flagged down a hostess and got my hot little hands on a few.
Perfect for storing sewing notions, trinkets and precious love letters from the mister, these "Romeo y Julieta" cigar boxes are a delightful addition to my ever-growing collection of containers.

I've got a hankerin' for ambient light. I can't shake it.

The florescent bulbs of hospitals or classrooms insult mine eyes, (no offense to Dan Flavin, of course) and I just can't seem to find a love for stark overhead lights, unless dimmed significantly, or shielded by a beautiful fixture. Perhaps I'm a romantic? Or maybe I just need my home to calm me, to glow instead of glare.

My collection includes several strands of christmas lights that hang year-round, candles that perch in almost every room, hanging paper lanterns, a lava lamp, antique table and floor lamps, 3 night-lights, outdoor stone lanterns, and even a glowing piece of petrified wood.

Yes, this need for little lights even leaks into the outdoor spaces of my casa, making the place seem bigger, like illuminated outdoor rooms in the night.

So while some of you are cut off from purchasing yarn or tape, I'm cut off from the candle aisle. And, ok, so I'm still working on quitting the old stock-up-now-while-the-selection's-hot! christmas light sections each december.

There is just something so seductive and inviting about a lowly-lit area, like being out under a full moon and the nurturing starry sky. All becomes shadows and beautiful grey areas.

So is this why I deeply love Paris, the city of light? And the fireworks and sparklers of July 4th? The traditional faralitos of Santa Fe?

Twinkle, twinkle little lights. You totally turn me on.

A small tumbler of Three-Buck Chuck, 'cause I'm no vino-snob.
Organic baby greens with a honey-mustard-garlic balsamic vinaigrette, topped with shaved purple onions, caramelized pecans, herbed goat cheese and garlic-rosemary roasted sweet potatoes.
Pork chops topped with a chutney of cranberries, apples and fresh ginger. On the side, roasted brussels sprouts and garlic splashed with balsamic vinegar. Ohh, how I am in love with these now-a days!
Slivers of the worlds best chocolate covered caramel, shipped all the way from the Elegant Truffle in San Diego.
